JOYCE N. VAN COTT was born in Glendale, California, in 1957. She attended Whittier College in Whittier, California, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Economy in 1979. She graduated from Whittier College School of Law in the top ten percent of her class in 1982. During her tenure in law school, she was a member of the Whittier Law Review, serving as the Note and Comments editor, and in 1981 published Death of the Automatic Standing Rule, 3 Whittier Law Review 257 (1981). She was also a member of the Moot Court Honors Board.

In 1983, she began practice as an attorney in Palo Alto, California. In her California practice, she specialized in general commercial litigation, including matters involving real estate and contract disputes. In anticipation of moving to Arizona, she took and passed the Arizona Bar Exam in 1984. In June 1985, she joined a well-known Phoenix law firm and assumed responsibilities for major commercial litigation matters as well as corporate, insurance, real estate, business association, and bankruptcy litigation matters.

In June 1986, she joined a Scottsdale firm where she became a partner and continued her practice in the commercial litigation field. In December 1989, she co-founded the law firm of Glover & Van Cott.

She is a member of the State Bars of Arizona and California and is admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Districts of Arizona, Northern California, Central California, and Southern California. She is also a member of the bars of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court, and has an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
